Connecting Cables

Here are some simple instructions for connecting the cables that came with your DSL modem.

Do not plug the Ethernet and USB cables into the same computer.

Before you begin, please make sure you have identified your modem by following the instructions on the "Identify My Modem" page.

Follow the instructions that apply to your modem type:

Instructions for Zoom X4 (1-port)

You can connect your computer to the Zoom X4 using either the Ethernet or the USB cable. It is better to use Ethernet. You can also use USB to connect a second computer. If you need to use USB, make sure that you follow the instructions for "Installing USB Drivers" before you connect the cables.

Use the following chart to help you connect the cables to your Zoom X4:

DO NOT PUT A LINE FILTER BETWEEN THE ZOOM X4 AND THE WALL JACK!!!
This will make the DSL not work!

USB black USB cable (one end is thin and rectangular and the other end is almost square with two rounded corners)

Only use USB if you cannot use Ethernet for some reason. You must install the drivers first by following the instructions for "Installing USB Drivers" BEFORE you connect the cable.

When you connect the cable, you may see a "Hardware Installation" window or a "Digital Signature Not Found" window. You can just click on "Yes" and/or "Continue Anyway" and/or "Finish" as needed.

PWR cable on power cube provided plug into a surge-protected power bar or UPS, if possible

Instructions for Zoom X5 (4-port)

You can connect your computer to the Zoom X5 using either an Ethernet or USB cable. It is better to use Ethernet. You can also use USB if you already have 4 computers connected to the Ethernet ports, and you want to connect a 5th computer. If you need to use USB, make sure that you follow the instructions for "Installing USB Drivers" before you connect the cables.

Use the following chart to help you connect the cables to your Zoom X5:

Instructions for SpeedStream 4200 (1-port)

You can connect your computer to the SpeedStream 4200 using either the Ethernet or the USB cable. It is better to use Ethernet. You can also use USB to connect a second computer. If you need to use USB, make sure that you follow the instructions for "Installing USB Drivers" before you connect the cables.

Use the following chart to help you connect the cables to your SpeedStream 4200:
